Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. The strategy to eradicate polio is based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free. Until polio is eradicated everywhere, no unvaccinated child is safe anywhere. Since 1985 Rotary has led the battle against polio and kept the pressure on as worldwide cases plummeted from 350,000 per year to several hundred. Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. Lack of funding will decrease immunization rates in polio-affected countries. When India was declared polio-free in 2014, one more step was taken toward eradicating a human disease from the earth for only the second time in history. Rotary and its partners are This Close to making that dream a reality. The Rotary Club of Greenville organizes a fundraiser each year to support polio eradication.
