Polio Plus

Rotarians and their international partners are on our Countdown to History to eradicate polio from the face of the Earth.  The decades-long campaign if following a timeline that would have polio eradicated by the end of 2026.  Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease.  There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. The strategy to eradicate polio is based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.  Until polio is eradicated everywhere, no unvaccinated child is safe anywhere.  Since 1985 Rotary has led the battle against polio and kept the pressure on as worldwide cases plummeted from 350,000 per year to a few dozen. Rotarians have helped immunize more than 3 billion children against polio in 122 countries.  For as little as $3, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.  Lack of funding will decrease immunization rates in polio-affected countries.  When Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2020, one more step was taken toward eradicating a human disease for only the 2nd time in history.  Rotary and it’s partners are “This Close” to making that dream a reality.  Greenville Rotarians give generously each year to support polio eradication.  For information on End Polio Now, click on https://www.endpolio.org/.
